It’s always totally fun to watch when two celebrities date, get married and/or go through a horrific break-up i.e. Brangelina, Bieber & Selena, Katie Holmes & Tom Cruise and so many more I can think of (that are totally old school). What’s more fun is when it’s on TV – remember Nick Lachey and Jessica Simpson?

Korea has their own version of this type of TV show called: Shin Hon Il Gi – Newlyweds Diary. The first season last year followed TV star newlyweds Ku Hye-Sun and Ahn Jae-Hyun. Ahn Jae-Hyun managed to melt the hearts of many women in Korea with his sweet talk and caring ways. He was also often the one in the kitchen BUT Ku Hye-Sun still definitely made it into the kitchen and was much about improvising ie. today’s simple sandwich!
Korean toast sandwiches most often include a version of eggs and sliced ham but alas, they had none of that in their fridge and so she managed to improve with what was on hand. I (and most of Korea) must admit that we were pretty skeptical of what the resulting sandwich would taste like but surprisingly, it is VERY yummy and I’ve made it several times now, particularly on days I feel a little bit lazy.

Enjoy this simple but tasty sandwich for that lazy day.

Her husband is obviously happy, surprised and impressed!

- 4 slices bread

- 2 Tbsp strawberry jam
- 1 1/2 Tbsp ketchup
- 1/4 onion
- 1/6th (150 g) head of cabbage
- 1 Tbsp olive oil
- 1 Tbsp minced garlic I prefer to chop my own garlic than using the pre-minced garlic
- 4 Tbsp mayonnaise I like to use Korean or Japanese mayo.
- 3 Tbsp diced pickles optional (not part of the original recipe)
- ground pepper

- Slice the onion and place into cold water for about 10 minutes to lessen the sharp bite out of the onion flavor. Pat dry the onions once time has passed.
- Prep the cabbage. Slice the cabbage into thin strips. Set aside.
- In a heated frypan, stir-fry the chopped garlic in oil until they turn golden and slightly crispy.

- Mix the crispy garlic, mayonnaise, (optional diced pickles) and ground pepper in a small bowl. Set aside.
- Melt the butter in a frypan and toast the slices of bread.
- Spread jam onto one toast and place half the cabbage and onion on top.

- Squeeze ketchup on top of the cabbage mixture. Spread the crispy onion and mayonnaise sauce on the other slice of bread. Sandwich together! Repeat with the other two toast slices and remaining cabbage and sauce mixture.

I found it easier to actually mix the cabbage, onion, and the crispy garlic & mayonnaise sauce all together to place into the sandwich. Do what's easier for you!
You can also add cheese, egg, or really any combination that of ingredients you have stacked up in your fridge. This really simple sandwich is very tasty and anything additional will just add some extra oomph!
